There hasn't been many sightings of Loremaster Phillip Gaelan lately. Some say he has been extremely nocturnal recently, others suspect he has been holed up in his study. Still others say that they heard he has been having to take Essence of St John's Wort a lot and was sent away for the good of his health.
Those in the know though know he has been working hard on the theories of magic, trying to work out, by using something called 'mathematics' to understand what is happening and seeing if the numbers will tell him how to fix it.
He sees the Veil (or Weave) as a three dimensional grid that envelops everything on this Prime Material. In areas where no magic is performed, the Veil is uniform in strength. In areas where the magic has been used, the Veil is stretched and warped. The more powerful the magic, the more the Veil is affected. The Veil slowly recovers from the strain but, if too much magic is cast in the same place, the Veil can bend and twist so much that it is weakened. It can be weakened so much that a Rift, Tear or Wormhole is formed that allows things to cross from Other Planes to this one.
Lumastars are suppose to repair the Veil by causing the Veil to return to normal in that area more quickly but, it is still not sure that a Tear can be repaired by use of a Lumastar. Some sort of MetaMagic Mending spell may be required to close the Tear before the lumastar can be effective.
By analogy, stretch out a blanket so it is tight and flat. That is the Weave in it's natural state. Using magic is like putting something heavy on the blanket that causes a dimple. The heavier the object, the bigger the dimple - and if the object is really heavy, the weight could rip the blanket, requiring it to be mended.
It is still unsure what may happen to the Weave. If, things are not changed, it is theorised that the entire Veil may collapse completely. This may mean that this Plane will be vulnerable from outside incursions or, that the collapse of the Veil may cause a hardening of the Barriers between Planes and cause Magic to completely disappear. Certainly, even if the proper action is discovered and implemented, it may well be that magic will never be as strong as it was. Maybe future mages will only be able to summon up low power effects with higher power effects being too difficult except for those who are 'gifted' in the Art. Because we squandered and wasted the Art now .. we may have left a magic-poor society for future generations - which may also include divine magic.
(To quote from Larry Niven) "And those damn stupid barbarians with their damn stupid swords will win in the end"
He is currently seeking out an expert in MetaMagic and Magical Theory in order to discuss the problem and give him pointers on where else to look.
