The Ranger in Dol-Terias is different from the Ranger in the Players Handbook. This section details the changes to the Ranger class, using the regular version in the Players Handbook as a foundation. For any topic not covered in this section, the ranger is identical to the Players Handbook ranger.
No spellcasting: Unlike Rangers in the players handbook, rangers in Dol-Terias do not gain access to spells. Instead, they gain the following additional special abilities.
Fast Movement: At 4th level a ranger’s base speed is faster than the norm for his race by +10 feet. This benefit only applies when the ranger is wearing light, or no armor, and not carrying a heavy load.
Shadows of the Forest: Rangers are known for their elusiveness as much as anything, and they learn, with time, to incorporate this concept into their fighting Style. A ranger of 12th level or higher only suffers a -10 penalty on hide checks when “sniping” (normally “sniping” incurs a -20 penalty on hide checks). This bonus is only applicable when the ranger is wearing light or no armour, and is in natural terrain.
Aspects: At 8th level, 12th level, 16th level and 20th level, a Ranger gains this ability, he learns to embody a certain aspect of one type of predatory animal, chosen from the list below. The bonuses are permanent and always in effect. All skill bonuses are competence bonuses, and saving throw bonuses are circumstance bonuses.
- Aspect of the Asp: The asp is a predatory species of snake, known for its sudden, swift strikes, and its ability to dodge out of harm’s way. Rangers who take this aspect are known for similar traits. The Ranger gains a +3 bonus on initiative checks, as well as a +2 competence bonus on all reflex saves.
- Aspect of the Bear: The Ranger who adopts this aspect learns the resilience, and oft times stubbornness, of the Bear. The Ranger gains the Die Hard feat as a bonus feat and a +2 competence bonus to fortitude saves.
- Aspect of the Eagle: Learning the ways of the most infamous of raptors, the hunter’s perception of his surroundings increases. The Ranger gains Low light vision (Doubles if character currently has low light vision), as well as a +2 competence bonus to Spot and Listen.
- Aspect of the Owl: Rangers who follow this path prefer to hunt their prey under the cover of darkness, and adapt to do so. The Ranger gains Darkvision 30ft (if the char already has Darkvision, it increases by 30ft), as well as a +2 competence bonus on will saves.
- Aspect of the Panther: The aspect of the panther focuses on stealth and speed to bring down its prey, things most hunters hold in high regard. The Ranger gains a +10 bonus to base land speed identical to the fast movement ability of a barbarian, as well as +2 competence bonus on Hide and Move Silently.
- Aspect of the Wolf: The Ranger embodies one of the most classic hunters, the sly and cunning wolf. He also gains the lupine’s famed olfactory skills. The Ranger gains the Scent ability, as well as a +2 competence bonus on Survival checks. (NOTE: Scent grants an additional +4 bonus to survival rolls made when tracking by scent).
