In Dol-Terias, there is no 'Common' language. Instead, each race has their own language, which may make communication more difficult, as is described below. Most people in Dol-Terias speak either Dolgan (on the Doltanbran side of the river) or Asturian (on the Terias side of the river). Regardless, when speaking in character, please indicate what language you are using.
Acquiring Languages
A characters race determines the basic languages they speak, as listed in the races document. Additionally, characters with a positive int modifier may learn one language per point of int. Some races list 'all' as possible bonus languages. In that case, the basic languages list (see below) is used. Thus, an elf with int 12 will know Elven and either Asturian or Dolgan (their choice), plus one more language. In all cases, the additional languages must be taken from the list of bonus languages.
Additionally, some classes give access to additional languages. Druids automatically know the secret Druidic language, and have access to Sylvan as if it were on their list of bonus languages. Wizards may add Draconic to their list of bonus languages. No other classes grant additional bonus languages.
Base Languages
Basic languages are available to be learned in Dol-Terias, by investing skill-points in the Speak Language skill. Each language costs one rank to learn. Since Speak Language is cross-class for most characters, this means usually two skill-points must be spent per language learned. Note that when learning languages in this way, there is no limitation to bonus languages. The bonus languages are relevant only during character creation.
Advanced Languages:
Advanced Languages are never available to new characters and can only be learned by investing skill-points in the Speak Language skill. Each language costs one rank to learn. Since Speak Language is cross-class for most characters, this means usually two skill-points must be spent per language learned. As a special additional restriction, Advanced Languages can only be learned In Character from an NPC teacher. Without a teacher (and, as a result, without DM approval) the language cannot be learned.
Secret Languages:
Secret Languages cannot be learned. They are granted only in very special circumstances. In the case of Druidic, it requires becoming a druid and taking a level in the Druid class. It can never be taught.
Note: Any languages not on one of the three lists (basic, advanced, secret) does not exist.
Literacy:
As a basis, all PC's are illiterate in all languages they speak. Aristocrats, Beguilers, Wizards, Bards, Monks and Clerics are exempt from this rule due to their superior education and are considered literate in all languages they speak.
To become literate in a language requires the investment of 1 rank in Speak Language. Since this skill is cross-class for most classes, this means a total of two skill-points must be invested.
Special note: Literacy is applied across the board. A character is either literate in all languages they speak or they are not literate in any of them.
